I got a bonus from a previous employer today (att) and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t intentional. I worked there till November but could’ve sworn I had to be there through December to get the bonus. Now do I just hope they never realize it or do I try to contact HR and see what’s going on… contacting att for anything always turns into a 5+ hour ordeal of nobody knowing who to transfer my call to..
I’d either: - keep it tucked in a savings account for a year or two waiting for a letter Or - email/sms a friend or manager at the company still and ask what’s up
Drop a generic mail to some most common email ID showing that you made an earnest effort to reach out. Then keep the money in VTI as saftey or Tesla to blow it up.
Drop a note saying thank you for the donation
They gave you the bonus for making you leave
It’s always better to return the funds. The error can happen but there’s almost reconciliation by year end so someone may find out. After 5 business they cannot reverse the transaction and they can only request you return it.
Is it possible it's a prorated amount?

My partner was overpaid by several pay checks when he left his last job (about $15,000). He contacted HR and then returned the overpayment. The HR rep said the CA company had 18 months to reclaim the money and likely the error would have been caught at the end of the fiscal year. In the end, it is much better to contact HR then to have them come after you later. You may find out that the bonus was intentional and then you don't have to worry about ATT coming after you a year from now.
It can be very expensive to pursue these matters so it typically has to hit a threshold or they'll just forget about it. $20k for my company
I have a friend who had a crazy mistake on his sign on. Over paid by $80k.
You should forgive people for their first mistake.
