I was talking with a friend & co-worker about some people who made some big bucks by joining Google, FB or Amazon at the right time. He quoted slack as a more recent example. I think we are suffering from "hindsight 20:20" syndrome 😄 Want to hear from veterans here who were at startups and who made it big or missed the mark big time. I have also heard cases where the startup made it big but many early employees ended up with little. TC:380k
Missed. Super startup. Would have been the first engineer/co-founder/CTO. Startup had a $100m exit. ☹️
Joined LinkedIn more than a decade back. Life changing moment.
Not going to say which startup but it's a unicorn now, but I joined as a new grad, traded down salary for equity, and at the end of the day the options went up a little so that I ended up with similar money as if I a slightly above average Google offer. Totally not worth it, I worked fing hard when I was there compared to people chilling at Google. I would say I basically broke even. I and many others irrationally hoped that the valuation would go up much more than it did, and didn't realize how much dilution would happen.
How much do you think equity would be worth it if you were to do it again?
Rejected Slack offer in 2015. Would be retiring now.. :(
Rejected doordash 2yrs ago at 1.4B valuation (70k equity over 4yrs) now it's valued at 12.1B
Joined DoorDash 3 years back when they were valued at 700m. Stocks are currently worth 3.5m @12.6b valuation. Hope that the price doesn't go down 😬
Founded a startup, when I owned 48% of the equity had the option to sell for 6M, after paying back investors would have walked away with around 2.5M before taxes. Got greedy, raised a VC round instead. Startup now gone and worth nothing
That’s sad. I think for an entrepreneur, the first exit is very important . Thereafter he/she can take additional risks as the cash cushion is present
What did the company do and when? It is already very hard and a success to get VC fund I think, way to go!

Graduated from internal startup accelerator with startup but it was defunded later due to typical company politics. IP is now with company since everything was internal. Next time I will keep idea to myself and get funding from outside.
Sorry to hear that.
Learned a lot along the way though, got a lot of coaching and mentoring. It's always good to start somewhere. I learned to not get too attached to ideas.
