Got humiliated by team director

I just joined as a new grad this week. Started setting up meetings with imp ppl in the organization. Today I had set up a meeting with the org director just to introduce myself as get overview about the org. During the meeting org director just started asking what courses I took and started asking questions based on that. I was caught off guard and before I could think of answering he would move onto next question. He told me that I don't know anything and who was that interviewer who took my interview and basically blasted me setting up meeting without consulting my manager and wasting his time. I just started working here and don't have much work exp. I feel devastated and feel like got off to a wrong start. TC 112/48/80

Welcome to Amazon

Welcome to Amazon. Good luck working for this director. He sounds like a jerk. Way to flex on the new hire. Your manager and skip’s opinion of you matter more than your director. Manage these relationships well and you’ll be fine to start off. You climbed too high on the introduction phase, and director chose to humiliate you rather than decline the meeting.

Initially I was hesitant to set up a meeting. Asked one of my co worker abt it and he told it should be fine

Your coworker kinda dicked you on that one. L4s shouldn't have an onboarding 1:1 with an L8. General rule is two levels above, so an L4 should meet with L6s and maybe/probably their L7.

That director was an a**hole for treating a new graduate like that. Ignore him and move on and work hard at your job. People like him shouldn’t be in leadership roles. Sorry you had to go through something like this.

You shouldn't have done that. The director might be managing hundreds of people under him, that is indeed a waste of his time.

Each new grad basically given a plan for ppl to meet in the org. My manager said set up meeting with them. He didn't tell me anything other than that

Even if he had lots of people to manage he shouldn’t be an asshole about it

Is this in Seattle?

Unless it’s Einstein, you don’t take shit from anyone

Walmart momoj Feb 19, 2020

Even if he is Einstein, he needs people to get the work done. So don’t give a shit. Positive spin to this story would be - you keep working hard, increasing you’re knowledge and really increasing your understanding. A year from now, you setup another TB and show him the work you did (if you think he is worth it). Don’t leave. Stay your ground. Go get him!

Really, why did you set up a meeting with the director? The way it works is - work your a** off until you get noticed.

Thermo Fisher VYrB60 Feb 20, 2020

I've seen that strategy backfire. Sometimes people don't notice, or in more cutthroat environments, the credit for work gets stolen. Hard (smart?) work is a good thing, but learning how to communicate it, when, and to the right audience, in the right way is a skill that pays off as well.

Amazon max9chars Feb 20, 2020

"when" was certainly wrong in OPs case.

That director is full of s**. Give them the names of people who interviewed you and ask him to follow up :D.
