Hi Blind community,
Have been thinking about it a lot but couldn’t find answers or explanation about why this happened. Asking for your help/suggestions
To start with , I lost my offer from PayPal and Uber as a Data Scientist in March 2020. And ended up accepting Walmart (low pay and at a lower level).
However I took this as a learning opportunity and aimed to get promoted in a year. I believe I contributed and worked a lot. I contributed in design, modelling and app deployments.
In my 1-1 my manager always praised me and told me I am doing a great work and continue doing that. He even promised me a promotion
But I was denied a promotion on the accounts of visibility.
I feel extremely upset as I believe I worked hard for it and I deserved it. I was required to code and develop the product and I did! Idk what was missing from my side. I spoke to my seniors (who I work with ) and they all seemed very positive about my promotion.
I feel so unsuccessful as compared to my friends who are not even doing half of work as I do and getting maybe double or triple the salary.
I feel my peers in my team know a lot less than me ( I have had conversations and could easily gauge ) but since they talk a lot they tend to be “popular” and probably are gaining more than me. But I always thought nothing matters more than your work and it’s always recognised.
But there have been multiple instances when the reality is just so opposite.
I believe this is not something what I thought work is gonna be when I was in college.

This is ok because you sound a little on the young side so not much time is wasted, you learned this lesson early.
Now learn how to talk about your work and you will be a dual threat
I understand what you are conveying , just feel awkward while doing such things.
Keep chugging. Or switch companies which is the best option when you don’t get recognized.
You get paid for coding
You get promoted for visibility
Wish I knew this earlier. My manager made me believe that promotion was right around the corner. But yeah, if he would have been more clear on what was the missing link or what’s the correct path to climb up the ladder , I would have actively worked on those skills. It’s my first full time job and it was naive for me to expect that from management.
I had a hard time accepting this, but companies are complex systems with complex parts too. The company may be wrong or have a bad culture, but always look for what you offer within that context, and gravitate towards what’s compatible.
With that being said, you can create momentum for change by speaking up to sensible leaders, but don’t have any expectations and work on empowering yourself with options.
Accept that, even if you’re great, the company may be better off without you and that’s okay. The company is there to make money first, not to satisfy employees. It’s hard to accept at first, but put yourself in the shoes of a stakeholder too.
Maybe you have to work a little harder then your friends..so do it. If you are unhappy..express that clearly and ask for a path towards a promotion next round.
It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
I was always praised on the quality or speed of my work. But I don’t understand how is it in corporate culture.
Why do people who know so less and talk more get so easily promoted and someone with good depth of knowledge (talking about other few whom I know) is ignored!
Can’t the leadership spot the difference between who actually implements the product and the one who just talks!
If you did the work, display it like a peacock else be ready to get mauled. It’s your responsibility to show others why you bring value, they can’t be guessing and searching for your git commits.
