If the bottom drops out of the economy and we see Great Depression level unemployment, should the H1B program be completely terminated until the economy recovers? Trump urged to pause H1B visa programme after job loss amidst layoffs: https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/nri/visa-and-immigration/trump-urged-to-pause-h1b-visa-programme-after-job-loss-amidst-layoffs/articleshow/74925783.cms?from=mdr
There are too many h1b workers here, this poll is basically citizens vs immigrants
Maybe this would finally bring home prices down.
This poll is too simplistic. Also, what's your yoe?
As an immigrant myself, just wanted to say those H1s who voted no are hypocrite scum --who would undoubtedly not want foreigners taking away jobs in his home country during severe recession That said h1 is meant for jobs not filled by citizens, so if some jobs are so specialized that you don't qualified folks even during recession, sure H1 only for those jobs is obviously a non issue.
I'm not talking about a recession. I'm talking about Depression level unemployment, as the title states. 25% unemployment or higher. In that scenario, there will be loads and loads of Highly skilled, educated, experienced, talented tech workers of all shapes and sizes that are US citizens, that are unemployed . Absolutely no need for H1B in that scenario.
That's pretty much what I said too!
I'm on H1B. On a personal level, I don't care. I'm not a saint in just giving away something that I earned through my own means legally and following all the BS policies that change quite illogically. But, if it's terminated, well and good, I can survive elsewhere.
Ditto ^ Also if I leave the country and get comfortable else where I don't think I'll be coming back.
Ignorance in abundance. If the h1bs are scrapped more work will go off shore. Americans won’t work on support work for the salary which these Indian consulting companies charge. And for the high tech jobs which would go vacant I’m damn sure there won’t be enough Americans to fill it. Even trump hires immigrants for his companies. Capitalism 101 I guess. Profit is king and h1bs bring in profit. What you want might work in a socialist country.
No bubble just experience. 2 things. 1) I think you’re not aware of how the onshore-offshore model works for the Indian consulting companies and why American companies make profit from them. 2) “high tech” jobs don’t go searching specifically for h1bs. They hire the best ones they could find. H1bs actually cost more to the employers with the visa and lawyer fees. And I’m pretty sure h1b employees get paid the same amount as citizens for these “high tech” jobs.
I think the main issue people have is with independent h1b contractors working for “consultancies”. Which I agree with gets abused a lot.

I am on H1b and voted yes. This is the only way to bring back some talent in India. I hope new companies will start in India in next decade if every H1b is sent back. Nothing against USA. Got best of opportunities here and paid taxes in return.
I voted yes because with great depression level unemployment we will have a massive over supply of labor. There will virtually be zero need for H1B workers. After the economy recovers it can be brought back. But during a great depression scenario, all available jobs should only be going to US Citizens.
Yes, Jim from accounting will suddenly start writing highly scalable software. Or Jack who just graduated will do the job of a Principal engineer at Google.
@amazon. Maybe you don't understand. With great depression level unemployment there will be boat loads of unemployed experienced engineers that can write highly scalable software. There will be an abundant supply of them - and they'll be unemployed due to economic downturn. You won't need to rely on Jim in accounting (if he still has his job).
