Idk this seems like some fringe part of YouTube, but naturally the media is all over it (see adpocalypse) because the more they attack YouTube, the more sponsorship money goes to them (the media) and not YouTube.
It’s been going on for years and Google has ignored it. Another big issue is child manipulation through children videos. It’s definitely not a fringe part of YouTube as these videos gets hundreds of millions of views, some even billions. Google has ignored it for awhile though because it brings in $$$
