Can anyone give me guidelines on what to expect? Interviewing for SDE, Mobile. How easy/ difficult are the interviews and any last minute tips to prepare? YOE 3
I used to work at Groupon on the mobile team. Difficult codebase yo work with. A LOT of technical debt and it's very brittle. Hard to work in. The worst part is that the it's a profit-first company so all they care about is hitting their quarterly profits. Makes engineers do bad things. Also their pay is terrible. I doubled my comp going to a FANG company. They keep claiming their competitive with industry but they're polling Chicago market.
That sounds terrible. What location did you work in? And how long after did you switch? I really felt the guy I spoke to was honest about where the company was going and how interesting his work was
I bet he is located in Seattle
Is this role in Chicago?
Yeah I was told this is for Chicago
I don't know what the mobile code base looks like but I know the director and he is pretty good. I do know that they really need mobile devs in Chicago as they are creating a new mobile team there, so they will pay you well by Chicago standards.
I’m at Apple now. Left Groupon a year ago. Really not in good shape. Things are hectic and is apparently getting worse. Very toxic work environment, political, and to top it off, they don’t pay very well. With that said, learned a lot. Just not sure if I’d suggest jumping in right now.
This was true a year ago, but engineering leadership at the top has changed and the culture is in recovery mode. The toxicity has decreased dramatically. Groupon isn't perfect but things culturally are much better now than a year ago
I’m surprised it changed that quickly but honestly happy. Have many great peers, mentors and friends from my Groupon days. Lots of people hit me up about the CB departure a few weeks back. Was shocked but not shocked. Glad it’s getting better. I’m sure it’s hard to overhaul the mess.
We are building out the mobile team in Chicago. The director is a good manager and engineer. From the POV of building a mobile e-commerce experience that is at scale, you’d gain a lot of experience IMO. You don’t have too many places with 50+M active customers with 80+% of users using the app on mobile. Groupon is 3rd most visited retail mobile app behind Amazon and Walmart. Sorry can’t specifically answer the question on on-site interviews.
OP how was your interview? have you appeared for one yet?
Actually I had my interview and was extended the offer, please pm for details.

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Not the best time to join imo
Y tho 👀
Would you mind explaining a bit more in detail? I know you guys have been facing layoffs recently, but isn't Groupon a mobile first company? I'm betting on the fact that there's still plenty of growth and considering that I'm interviewing for a new team, this could be stable. Of course all of this is a lot of assumptions.
