Hey Blind community I currently feel like I'm in a rut and would really appreciate some advice on my situation.

I am attending a top 15 private university as a sophomore, and have to pay full tuition. My parents are adamant on having me pay college for myself, which is understandable because it holds me accountable to do well in school. I was able to intern at Tesla for the duration of a year- and I was able to make connections while building great resume experience (no full time offer bc I'm not graduating yet).

I have been looking into private loans and based off my credits, I will have to be in school for 5 more semesters which means I will be in ~200k debt if I remain. I've talked to the financial aid office at my school and received basically no aid since they looked at my parents financials.

What should I do? One one hand I don't want to be in so much debt coming out of undergrad. At the same time I am scared that if I transfer to a cheap school (CUNY or SUNY since I'm from ny unfortunately not cali), I will be limiting my career/networking opportunities. Please help!!!

You have a great internship under your belt and connections. I’d advise transferring to a school like CUNY. Even without your internship if you do well there you still have a good chance at landing a great job! With your prior internship, it’s basically guaranteed.

  • Your school prestige has little effect on your career prospects if you plan to be an SDE (speaking from personal experience and that of my peers). Wouldn't hesitate to transfer to a good state school.

Mostly agree with this. My fear still stems from my unsureness of what I want to do career wise. I've been thinking of Swe, pm, ops, VC and even 3D art/animation (had some radical thoughts of going to art school even though Ive never created a portfolio in my life)

You can do all of these from a CS major, but you can’t do all of these very easily from a liberal arts major (coming from someone who majored in Econ and is now a SWE)

  • Don’t listen to that school prestige is worth nothing nonsense. That’s limited to the current bay area bubble. Just be sure to get good grades. And get your parents to chip in. It’s not ok for them not to help you out if they can.
