I have 5 publications (two second author, no first author), with ~ 150 citations and have reviewed papers for NeurIPS and ICML. I have a EB2 I-140 approved. I work as a machine learning scientist at the R&D unit of my company. Should I port to EB1? What are my chances of getting an EB1 approved ?

Citation is not as important as having first author papers in peer reviewed flagship conferences and journals. One could cover for lack of this if your work has been featured with your name on it in general and or scientific magazines, and you company would have to have a reputation in the scientific community, than can be backed up with 3rd party articles, papers published, etc.

That being said, still sounds like your EB1 case would fall short

If you can provide evidence your current employer is reputed, that’s a factors. But again without dirt author publication seems hard. Maybe if you have a good parent record?

Go for eb1b, not eb1a. High chances of approval.

I got EB1 and multiple O1s with less than 50 citations but I have a PhD and a long research career. Citation count alone is not enough and at most meets one criteria. You need to be well known, show influence, be invited for talks etc. in your field of specialization.

You don’t really need to be well known. Just good credentials, school with a reputation either know or a that can be demonstrated, have worked at reputable labs, and papers in good impact conference or journals. You don’t need to be well known at all, no need to have influence, nor to have talks. I’m not saying it doesn’t help, but it definitely doesn’t really make or break your application

It really depends on what your profile looks like in other areas. Publishing is just one of the criteria out of 10 you can satisfy. Note you only need 3.
