Product/UX Design referrals?
I’ve been looking for a full-time role in San Francisco for over 16 months. I’m a contractor right now (it was all i could get when i relocated here early last year). I’ve had 12 final round onsites in that time (ranging from startups to FAANG companies alike), and have literally had the best interviews of my life only to find out that budgets got rescinded or they changed the role to Principal/Staff designer, get totally ghosted by recruiters, just simply turned down, etc etc.
It’s been pretty belittling and defeating, but im still chugging along. I have a background in graphic design/animation and a masters degree in Human Computer Interaction, and 5-7 yoe in UX/visual design overall. I’m looking for mid-senior level roles, open to anything, but have a soft spot for gaming/entertainment industries. Would anyone be willing to refer me to any open roles they might have?

If you’re not willing to share a portfolio, it’s usually one of the following things:
- too long, too wordy
- too much process shown
- insufficient articulation of problems and how you solved them
- lacking visual design
- no explanation of results/impact
This isn’t to say that most companies don’t suck at interviewing and evaluating designers. They absolutely do, but there are steps you can take to tilt things in your favor.
Don’t underestimate visual design. And yeah I agree, this is dumb because nearly all companies have an established design system or they’re theming Material, but it’s a thing nonetheless.
