Huge reversal in inflow of people from India - may be biggest impact on people coming to educational institutions for Masters. Possibly causing people to return home or seek for greener pastures. No matter this happens or not, this constant threat and ambiguity to make the American dream is exhausting.
Canada immigration boosts up. Universities enrollments already losing sheen especially educational tourism. The cream anyday gets into ivy league. If H1B isn't there, they would settle somewhere else. I would love to see that! If Canada utilises this properly, it can be the next biggest tech hub after US. Serious policy and investment effort should go with a 10 year horizon. I'm also counting on Singapore and SE The US will still enjoy as world's best tech platform for atleast 2 decades and would then be dislodged mercilessly! Currently, It's way above threshold and these regressive policies doesn't show immediate effect.
Good for everyone
"Two senior Indian government officials said on Wednesday they were briefed last week on a U.S. government plan to cap H-1B visas issued each year to Indians at between 10% and 15% of the annual quota. There is no current country-specific limit on the 85,000 H-1B work visas granted each year, and an estimated 70% go to Indians." Hm.
India is a reliable source of mostly mediocre software engineers and in the long run it will not matter. I'm from India and I'm always surprised by the number of Indians who think that tech will collapse without Indian engineers and the emigration of Indians is what makes other countries great. Once we manage to put India on the pedestal we think we put other countries on, we can talk about how our emigration influences the world. For every Indian on a H1B who belittles their Visa, there's a thousand back home who wish they could switch places. So let's have a little gratitude and remember where we came from. And those of us who did an MS should know by now that the only reason we are here is because our parents could afford to send us abroad. Just had lunch with my team where there was a guy who was strongly of the opinion that the US was built on the backs of Indians and they have an obligation to allow Indians to immigrate easily. Had to vent.
Saying most software engineers from India are mediocre is a similar generalization as saying US was built on the backs of Indians ( I hope he didn’t mean native Americans) and they deserve easy immigration.
Oh, don't you know you can never complain because someone is worse off?
That's the real tariff against India.
How does this help USA? A few million tax dollars lost and helps more work off shored.
A skilled person earns X. He pays 30% tax directly to US government. His consumes goods and services, again 25% spent, pays tax and his consumption is revenue to someone. Is there an equally skilled worker in US who proactively went to a university and doing the value added work? Immigrants fill the skill gap. Pays college tuition fee (revenue to US) and pays interest, principal to banks (a profitable mini corporation with revenue>cogs). Every activity happening in the US. Average revenue per employee is $1mn for Apple and $200k for IBM. So there is a great value add for the companies/stocks/firms by a skilled individual. Borrowing skilled workers by creating aspirations, life style promise and subsequently creating an eco-system is the greatest hack of all time to create GDP ! US got a decade or two to enjoy the same.
I believe US has the engineers who can be as productive as anyone. It is just that it doesn’t have good enough numbers to compete in leetcode exam oops interview. If you look at the startups, most of core functions were built by American engineers including Asian Americans (people are often mistaken that all Asians are from Asia). Also H1B has been a lottery with 1:3 ratio. That means even if we lose out many Indian engineers, we would still have plenty from all over the world. In fact, that might even help since less of staffing agencies will be incentivized to bring people from India. This will drive up the wages for contractors as Americans will take the job. It also helps India to have a chance to build companies with engineers selected from wider pool as some students will go back.
I believe india as a country doesn't give shit how many people r leaving by getting H1B visa. However companies from India do benefit a lot from it and will be impacted. So Trump is using it as negotiation trick to sell more American products in india and get preferential market access in fast growing large economy.
Nothing will happen
The H1b will go wasted
