Has anyone recently had H1b extension rejections for Senior SDE(8+ yoe) positions in FANG Companies . What was the reason? I recently heard about an Amazon L6 SDE with 10+ yoe, whose visa extension was rejected with out RFE. He was in USA for 8+ years and his GC was in processing. He was from non-computer science engineering(India). I’m little worried now because my visa extension is next year. I’m in a similar situation. 10+ years in USA and Senior SDE. Mechanical engineering background. Want to know ( based on others experience) with the new rules, is extension denial a certainty for non-computer science BTechs. Want to start planning early, maybe Canada. Is it possible to come back later on an L1 visa if my extension gets rejected. Has anyone with similar situations tried H1b through different company later and had success. I mean is it the case of some immigration officers trying to fill the rejections quota. Is companies still processing the GC after rejections? Concerned visa holder
People with no background in computer science are being rejected. I heard similar things in visa stamping.
What about Electrical Engineering?
I have an EE degree, got RFE for transfer to FANG. Took multiple CS courses in masters so have responded , still awaiting response. Will update , hopefully with good news ..
Since you have time , why don't you spend time and money to level up your education? You have to work to stack odds against you.
Leveling up is kinda tricky and dangerous for Visa extensions!.
Not from education perspective. And risk without education is higher than with education. Knowledge and degree does not harm.
Yes visa stamping was denied for a friend who went after 10 years and had non-cs degree
Which company? Which year was the rejection? Is the rejection specific to non-CS stream? Or is it because attorneys screwed up the paperwork?
Yes they are rejecting a lot of H1B extension. Seems the main cause is the change of position and /or type of work. Make sure you maintain whatever was approved for you last time. Also, they are definitely digging up your education qualification too. If your education is irrelevant to what you are working at, the chances of rejection are higher. Yes, there is an option to apply through different company and getting approved. There are success cases, but it complicated and not a sure shot. Yes you can come back on L1, depending on which company you are going back to and your history with it. Else if it's a new company you will have to wait for 1 year before they could apply.
Might be dependent on if you are chinese or not too. Given the news of espionage yesterday POTUS might wake up tommorow and deny all chinese
That's BS
Do you have your masters in CS?
Nope. I don’t have any masters. Has 12+ yoe in software field
You came in non trump era and didn't plan well and invest in education. It's unfortunate with what's happening but it's only going to get worse.
what about someone who has BE in xyz field but has Masters from USA in CS?
Why are H-1Bs the only non-CS grads able to get CS jobs? An American with an engineering degree other than EE wouldn’t even think about applying for a CS job. I think this is a good thing that H-1Bs without relevant degrees are getting rejected. Maybe companies will now be forced to hire locals and train them. BTW in the first dot-com boom about 50% of web work was done by liberal arts majors.
Same thought. A friend of mine is EE major. He wants to jump to CS but it is tricky because of his background. How come a MechE can work at Amazon as SDE under H1B but my friend cant?
Because H-1Bs will work cheap. OPTs will be cheaper because company doesn’t have to pay FICA
Sometimes I don't get the worth of desis moving to USA. Consistelyly living in fear all the time of being asked to leave , and worse, you have lost everything back home and need to restart. Sometimes you are too overqualified and costly for Indian companies to hire. Often derided by locales and never really accepted or absorbed. Why not stay in own country and live as Kings?

Do you really think Amazon is that bad
Yeah a friend went back to India after an unfortunate event
Microsoft employee? Level? In 2018? Do you know the reason for rejection? Do you know if he can come back? I mean what are the attorneys saying?
I know a case where this happened. A guy from amazon with phd in mechanical but a researcher in ML for h1b denied for capgap!!!! Its crazy now. You do have a risk. Level was l4 2 tie
