Hey,

Looking to join a series B company - raised about 40M total, based in SF in the FinTech space. Just finished my MBA. Have about 1.5 product experience prior to my MBA. The recruiter says this is at the higher side of a lower band, and when I move to the upper band (in presumably a year) I will get a hike.

Edit: Total work ex, 4.5 years. 1.5 years product, 3 years management consulting. I'm still interviewing and could get a competing offer, but I really like this company. Also, don't want to be at FAANG, wanted to do FinTech, so sector sort of important. Just wanted to know if this is a lowball or fair and how to negotiate bands.

Comp:
Base: 140K
Signing: 5K
Equity: 15K over 4 years

1. Is this a fair product offer?
2. Is it better to be at a high end of a lower band or a low end of a higher band? What tactics could I use to negotiate a higher band?
3. Any negotiation tactics?

low for an mba role due to paltry bonus amount, but if you got dinged at faang then its what it is.

You cant negotiate when you dont have a competing offer because you have no anchor aka zopa. Looks like you didnt take negotiation 101

Yes you can. You just need to get the data to back your claims of what "fair" and "market rate" is. Evidence: I've done it twice.

At the end of the day, they wont pay any more than they think you are worth regardless of how much you are paid below the market rate. The reason you need a back up offer is so that you have an exit strategy- when you negotiate you gotta be ready to walk away.

Also for negotiating get your career counselor to work with you. Got a loose script from mine that got me 15k more base from a start-up. They've got data too which is helpful in negotiations.
