HR salary negotiation perspective

I am curious what happens on the other side of salary negotiations. Any HR and hiring managers in here who can describe the process, or a scenario, any tips?

Recruiter here. It depends on the company. There’s usually a range and sometimes the hiring manager decides the numbers and sometimes it’s comp/HR. What candidates don’t realize is how much internal equity is taken into consideration. If you have five years of experience and there’s a rockstar on the team with 8, they usually won’t give you more money than the rock star. In other words, hiring managers compare your experience to everyone else on the team and will pay you accordingly. If a company doesn’t want to budge on base salary, try asking for more RSUs and a sign on bonus. Internal equity is not taken into consideration with those two, so you might have more luck.

As a hiring manager, we review proposed offers with HR in advance to align with what the candidates are looking for. We typically include room for negotiation for base salary, cash sign on and RSUs. Depending on what the candidates ask for, we can customize the package. If it’s unreasonable, we may have to say no or get a higher level approval.
