Manager who's been with the company for 10 years quit. Morale is kinda low especially after the stock drop. Had an amazing relationship and was sad to see them go.

I'm one of the senior people in the team but have been with the company for only a year. How do I position myself in this situation?

My guess is that skip would want me to help out in the interim and play a more visible role and possibly take on more responsibilities. I don't want to be a manager myself but feel like this may be an opportunity to somehow capitalize and possibly shoot for a ic promo (was down leveled when hired).

Otoh I'd want to Leetcode and GTFO if things don't start improving and the company starts going downhill, but I need buy time to prep.

Any thoughts?

Don't guess. Talk to your skip and find out what they expect of you during this transition. You can let them know you're willing to pitch in and pick up some of the day to day management slack, but they may consider that a distraction for you and not what they need from you at this time. It's impossible to know without having a discussion with them

If you see room for growth, come up with what you would do and how you’d like for the company to comp you for it. But don’t overplay your hand either.

  • IMO try shoot for the ic role because the opportunity to do LC prep will always be there

Want to make sure I put the time and effort at the right place. If in the long term things aren't going to work out, why not fade into the background and LC?

    • You can’t predict that but you can make an educated guess by understanding your company culture, the way promotions are done, what your skip expects from you

Then you can compare which paths by comparing pros and cons and likelihood of both

  • Why not do both? Leetcode at night till midnight and shoot for ic role during the day

With little kids and a spouse that has a demanding job, that's super hard if not impossible
