How do you deal with managers who micromanage to the point of making you feel anxious about coming into work? I recently got a new position / got promoted and have a stellar track record at PayPal but this new manager is something else...

The new manager is inexperienced and undertrained. Usually this behavior comes from fear. So, solve it. Figure out what hey are afraid of. Over-communicate. Show them you can be trusted. Send a daily report. Lots of details. Lots of assurance you've got it under control. Be a bit ridiculous at first. As their confidence in you rises, ask if you can lower the frequency. They'll find another target for their fear. They usually move on to but someone else.

Run. if you're good, it shouldn't be a problem for you to find another job. IIRC internal transfer is ruled out for you since it's less than 12months since you joined, but ask your previous boss (or some manager you trust) if there's a workaround that will allow you to move laterally. Micromanagers aren't worth the headache because you spend more of your time "managing" their expectations and get less mental bandwidth to actually improve and have fun while at it. The worst kind of micromanagers are the ones who used to be decent ICs but don't really "get" management so they weigh in and double check every tiny detail.

I once had a micromanager at a previous job. He used to watch over my shoulder as I debugged issues or asked to review every piece of work related email I ever sent out to anyone outside the team or at times used angry, intimidating tone when asking questions about issues related to work showing no trust and double checking every detail. I was a junior engineer then and this curtailed my growth severely and I just felt miserable. Leaving that team/company was the best decision I made. Life is too short for working with jerks

Yeah good point. I was a junior engineer and was doing great. Now as a senior engineer I'm feeling like a I'm being treated as a fourth grader hah

I was in that situation and switching teams was a great move for me. Micromanaging and constant nagging just leads to anxiety and stress. Go to a team where the manager is more hands-off and trusts you to do your job - there's no reason they shouldn't, especially as a Senior engineer with a track record.
