HW to SW inside Apple

I'm curious to know if anyone in Apple has gone from hardware to software internally. Precedented? Is it frowned upon? Difficult?

There is 0% chance of that happening

Oh ☹️ Any reasons why? Couldn't someone just apply to an internal job req?

I would say the possibility is low but definitely not zero. Also there are a wide range of SWEs across multiple BUs. Depending on which org you are transferring from and to. I have heard some SVP would like to show how good his group is compared to the other group by having more people. transferring from a specific BU. My experience HW-SW (different SVP) zero as SW team will most likely torture you during internal interview HW-HWTE (Same SVP): good chance as HWTE are stressful work HW-Ops (different SVP): good chance, same reason as HWTE HW-SEG (different SVP): good/bad chance but not direct personal experience. I just heard JS doesn’t like DS so there is chance they won’t take you because they think you are a leftover from HW team, or you are a super star and they like you you because you choose his team. And definitely don’t tell your manager no matter how close you are with him. Even if he doesn’t tell anyone anything, he will report to his manager even before you start the process. Also, do not click apply on the internal job page until you are 100% you are switching, a click will send an email to your manager. Finally, be prepared to have a backup option (external preferred) otherwise your next review is going to burn for sure (esp if you are in Hw) Good luck

Thank you so much!

Apple hires you for a reason. You cannot change that reason once you join.

Thanks for the replies! I guess Apple isn't one of this places where internal mobility is encouraged...?
