All, I applied for a senior product manager role at one of the companies in silicon valley and they sent me a hackerrank test. My coding days are done 8 years ago. Is hackerrank all technical or do they test me for other skills? Appreciate your response. If it’s all coding, then some hard working developer might have a better chance than me and I’d rather not waste the company or my time.
Is it based on algos or actual coding?
Requirements will be minimal, worth a shot. For some PM positions, you should polish up on coding skills just enough so engineers have some acceptance of you. Be able to solve fizz buzz and write a merge sort, basics
More than acceptance, there might be internal tools that require basic programming to use for a PM(analytic tools like splunk or elk come to mind). Or the company is more of a api/service oriented company like stripe needing a product manager who is tech savvy. Which might be what they are testing for in this case
Why not just open the hackerrank and see what they are asking for? If it’s coding, just close the site and move on OP!
Question really is if prep time is worth it OP. Hackerrank test is timed I think, can't just open it to look if you don't prep, and still would prefer to get the job
Ya, totally agree, but OP specifically says if it’s mostly coding they would prefer not to waste their, or the companies time. Just assuming here that OP doesn’t want to prep for coding
Appreciate all the responses. It’s not that I don’t want to brush up or prepare coding. But I just don’t think it’s fair or it makes sense. I am not a developer or coding reedy. So, if it’s coding skills they want, I don’t want break the test somehow and get called for interview and waste their time. The url for hackerrank days Product but wasn’t sure. I am aksing cause if it’s product, I want to take the test. If it’s coding, I will skip. The dilemma is once I open the link, the time clicks. It’s like schrodinger’s cat. I am losing and gaining opportunity with out clicking that link.
Paste this reply to the recruiter 😊 They are there to help you get the job! Who knows, you might even have gone down a wrong hiring funnel.
Above occasionally happens, can't hurt you to check with recruiter. But coding interviews can happen, and as far as I know HackerRank is coding tests only
Closing loop on this and providing an update for others if it helps. I finished my test and it was all product related. No coding involved.
What kind of questions? I am with the same problem. A hackerrank with 3 questions and 1h30 of time. I bet it is coding.. but it is a pm position.. and the sample hacker rank test is fizzbuzz Oo and I already asked the recruiter.. let see what it is..
