Forgive me if it sound offensive, I respect the liberty someone got to keep their sexual orientation the way he/she/binary want. But what is the “pride” in going half naked in most....(not sure how to put without offending, say unpleasant?) way on street?
Read the article I posted above. I don't think the original pride parade was meant to promote their lifestyle. It was meant as a statement about what they are about. The media did the promotion, which inappropriately exposed this to the general audience. That's obviously a problem so as corporations and celebrities join the parade there's a lot of pressure to tone down the sexuality aspect of it and just merely celebrate our "differences". I think eventually it will alienate queer folks so much that they'll organize some other event for themselves where general population is not welcomed. You can see similar trends happen to Burning Man where they have fenced in areas with air conditioning and segways for rich folks lol
Wtf are government oppression and pseudo pride??????
https://www.them.us/story/kink-bdsm-leather-pride/amp Interesting read. Don't you think the original pride parade has been hijacked by corporations and the mainstream folks to show that they're inclusive?
I take a nuanced view. Sure, it’s been hijacked in some ways, but thinking back to my own experience growing up: if I’d seen celebrities and athletes I worshipped, and companies whose products I liked, openly and publicly affirming my humanity, I might’ve been significantly less self loathing and depressed as a teenager. I grew up in a very religious household and community, so this would have had a great deal of meaning for me, because everyone else said I was worthless and hellbound. If it does that for even ONE kid, appropriate that shit til the cows come home, corporate America! Besides, it is only because of corporate money that Pride has as much reach, publicity and power that it does now. There were activists back before the money, but they never bothered to visit rural Georgia (predictably, these activists only marched or protested in their own localities). Until the Human Rights Campaign came along, the activists’ legislative successes were next to nil - sure, they could break windows and throw shit at the police, but beyond that, they weren’t particularly effective. Most importantly, I’d venture the overwhelming majority of people - urban and rural - had never heard of pride parades (or gay people as anything other than defective) UNTIL that money started flowing. Pride is supposed to be for everyone in the LGBT community , not just the elitist yet “anticonformist” “genderqueer” anti-corporate alphabet soup people in big cities. I would argue those people are the bigger betrayers of the legacy, missing the forest for the trees. My own thoughts as a gay man: we should embrace our allies where we find them, and “resign” ourselves to enjoying the fruits of becoming mainstream. Riding the coattails of a movement that has achieved its own independent monetary momentum, after decades of blood, sweat and tears, is really not such a terrible thing, and it frees us up to do real activism in other areas that are still contested.
If you say so. 🤷♂️
