I take Amtrak between NYC and DC several times a week. Question for other riders, aside from the obvious faster arrival time of Acela, have you noticed the NE Regional is actually a better design in most ways? The lighting is soft ambient lighting vs the Acela's harsh Walmart style fluorescent lights. And on the regional you can actually sit comfortably in the cafe car. Am I crazy?? Or just have too much time to think about it while on these trains?

I agree that Acela is not clearly better. Even with the automatic Star Trek doors between cars.
I think Acela is new, cleanwe and smother then Amtrak I really never paid attention to lightning. I think the NYC to DC is the most bussiest route in whole county.
