Has anyone taken a gap year and returned to the industry?

No moralist musings about why not to do it, just actual experiences please. Curious on how much can this prevent you to get offers (my intuition is that it shouldn't matter much if you keep your skills sharp, contrary to popular belief)

i did this multiple (2) times. once for 3 years and once for 1 year. coming back was no problem whatsoever in either case. of course i’m fucking good. if you suck or are just mediocre, good luck

    • I don't think msft gives a rat s arse. Bonus points if you are a minority or a woman with a convincing reason

i said i took time off. what do mean justify it? i wanted to not work for a while. to pursue something else. i got hired at faang after 1 break so yeah no problem. again, if you pass the interview bar i’m not sure what the concern is. they don’t care. just tell a good telling of what you did and why you came back. it’s probably in your favor tbh as you will stand out. i mean if you are going to jail for a year, yeah that won’t work (you won’t pass background) but if you’re building a house or traveling or just jerking off they don’t care

I've done it, took a year off, just told them it was for personal reasons. Started interviewing after I got bored, had an offer from a FAANG within a month. Anytime it came up I just said it was to take a break. Some interviewers thought I was still working at my old job... I just stopped correcting them (my resume clearly showed the gap)

Just depends on your skills/ability to demonstrate. I hadn't touched C++ for a year, but I still remembered enough to write code/pass all the tech screens. (without any prep either, fuck leetcode).
