Federal and state law makes it illegal for employers to discriminate against an applicant or employee on the basis of race, age, color, sex, religion, or national origin. If employers are prioritizing hiring minority races (read: only blacks and latinos; asians and indians conveniently don’t count in their definition) and females, that implicitly means they are giving preference to them and therefore discriminating against other races like asians and whites (and discriminating against males). Isn’t that illegal?
I read a news few days back a lawsuit against VMware for diversity hiring. Don't know what happened of it.
Yeah, no. Reverse racism is a bigot's fave talking point. To paraphrase, "when you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression."
I agree with the statement. Why can't businesses be color-blind and gender-blind and hire the talent that is best for their business? Let the best win. Further, it is not the role of a company to correct societal problems ( real or percieved ).
Because racism and sexism are so deeply engrained into society and subconscious decisions that we have to make an extra, conscious effort to counteract it. Society has put people of color and women at a disadvantage since day 1 and that's why white men are at the top of everything today. By making that conscious effort to seek out diversity in the workplace, we create new role models for people of color and women, bring new perspectives into play, and overcome the status quo of defaulting to white men.
^ Where the fuck are you living? This has certainly not been the case in my entire lifetime in the US (I’m also not a WASP)
Do you actually think like this in real life?
Everyone does, be honest about it.
Employer hire minorities and females because it’s good to have diversity, this allows different voices advocating for different things. I don’t think employers prioritize minority or female hires. They state that they’re equal opportunity employer because they’re trying to look pass skin color and judge ppl by their experience.
Nope. As a hiring manager at AWS we for sure give priority to females / diversity hires. It’s not like I won’t hire the white middle aged guy but I get a lot of help to find anyone but that. For me I don’t care what sex or race, just want diversity of thought and qualified people.
I’m not against diversity or anything, but just curious is there any scientific evidence that diversity is good for business?
Wasn't it illegal 50 years ago but happened on a daily basis against minorities? Why didn't your parents submit to a newspaper about that injustice? Oh wait
No. Because that doesn’t happen. Geez!
Important thing: orgs do better when they are more diverse. You have a better chance or turning your options into real money if your company does well. Having a diverse group of people benefits you.
Serious question, Any evidence for that? Google is like 60% Indian males and doing just fine.
I am in favor of diversity as long as it is based on competancy.
