I’m a graduate of a top 5 business program (undergrad). I now work as a business consultant (currently at KPMG but switching over to MBB). I feel like I’m wasting my talents in consulting/business and can’t really see a great career ahead. Since we don’t get stock compensation our income is solely dependent on the salary, which is also demotivating, especially when you see how much total compensation people in tech get. I am considering on switching careers because of the lack of intellectual fulfillment in business. I’m considering to apply to either medical school, or obtaining a masters in Info Sci to get into management roles in the tech field. I could have done investment banking, but for all the hours you put in I might as well just do something else that’ll give me a similar compensation. I love entrepreneurship and love working with startups and in VCs (I have prior experience). But as just a business major I don’t feel like I have a lot to bring to the table. What would you guys recommend for me to do? TC: $69k + ~5k bonus YoE: 1 #finance #consulting #techcareer #medical
Congrats on MBB! 1) Make EM (or AP!) at MBB 2) Move as L6/7 to G or FB or as a Dir of Strat Ops or BD to a Unicorn. Life will be good!
Is L7 really possible? I heard EM is L5/L6 and AP is L6, unless you're really close to the partner. Source: friend is an EM at MBB and is watching closely exit options of their cohort
EM = L5 at Google. AP = L7-8 at Google
What’s your YOE and location? It’s obviously personal but power through with MBB on your resume (1-2 years) and then think about switching to tech or major new education investment. After that 1-2 years, I’d switch to tech in a strategy role. Medical school is for people who’s calling is medicine not just another thing to try. And the debt hole you’d create is just not worth it if your already debating it.
Doesn't MBB still have some program where they will pay your tuition at top MBA if you agree to come back?
Yes, they pay it for top performers (so not guaranteed). But the catch is that (depending on the office) you have to go back and work for them for a set number of years.
You will be fine.. your careers fine. If you feel like your work ethic is degrading look for a better job outside of the giants. Explore. You’re too young. If you choose grad school, you will still be fine…
Go work for a good big tech company…. Lots of challenges and fast paced work environment. You could easily make 3-4x that amount depending on where you live. But don’t just chase the dollar… look at benefits, time off, work environment and WLB… there are good ones out there… just be choosy
Start a business!

Product Management. Use that business acumen and mindset. PMs make great money and tech companies are hiring them like crazy.
There’s a shortage of good product managers too. In the right context, with solid design understanding, you can get a big step up.
There’s still a big improvement in the nature of the work and people you interact with at mbb compared to kpmg so you do have that to look forward to. Medical school is a huge investment of time and money. Unless you have premed reqs and the clinical research already done you are about 4 years away from starting med school. Honestly the roi might be poor for you. Masters of info sci is useless. Just spend 1-2 years at a startup instead. More valuable on your resume and you get paid. Mbb have digital practices that can help position you to jump into tech too. At the end of the day though you need to have interest and skills in computers and programming to make the switch. Learn to code!
I won’t make a recommendation but I will provide a reality check. As a non-techie (i.e. business side of tech) you will not be getting the same RSUs as your tech (SWE/DS/DE, etc.) counterparts. It’s important that you understand this BEFORE making the jump to tech
would you find a master of professional studies in information science (from a top college) to be worth it?
PM is also another path that someone with an MBB background can crack
