Hello, how do I get into tech ?

Apr 16 9 Comments

Hello, I currently work as a Sales / Business Dev guy with a lot of experience in closing orders / new market penetration / business dev etc. I’m fairly good at what I do. I’m in the Electrical / Mechanical manufacturing space calling on clients in the O&G, Energy, industrial / Construction space. I make decent money (very competitive within my industry)… but some of the salaries I see here in the tech industry is just nuts (read: awesome!). I have no background in software or tech, but I’m a pretty fast learner. How do I make the transition into sales within the tech sector (Amazon, Google, etc). Has anyone made this transition before? I have 12 yrs of experience..#sales

You need to figure out what type of sales you want to do. Ads, cloud, devices, and software are the main sales roles in tech. You’re going to see a lot of crazy TCs on Blind, but they’re all SDEs.

Happy to chat on how to break in. I’ve done Cloud at AWS and I’m currently in Ads. For reference, I’m at 300k TC with 7 YOE. Nowhere near those engineering offers you see on here

Why dont you look into bus dev role for the industry you are familiar with (O&G, energy)? Try to look for roles that ask this industry expertise in aws, azure and GCP.

You’re gonna have to start at the bottom as a BDR. This is entry level and no one will question your lack of experience. Your 12 years in manufacturing sales counts for nothing at this point. That experience will help you grow into a Sales Executive faster, maybe 18 months down the road but u gotta pay your dues and learn a lot of domain knowledge to be a decent software Sales Exec. You’ll find you can’t rely on your pre-sales team and you’ll need to be the SME if you want to optimize your closed wons.

Apply to every BDR position available. It’s a numbers game.

Look to break in as an AE at a growth stage startup where you think you can do 300%+ of ur number. Accelerators is where the real $ is made.
