I just received offers from Amazon and Microsoft Seattle offices. I have 1.5 YOE and wondering which offer I should go with. Amazon SDE1 (Alexa) Base: 140k 1st yr sign-on: 32k 2nd yr sign-on: 26k RSU: 41 shares/82k 1st year TC: 175k 4yr average TC: 175k Microsoft 60 (Azure, but the manager said that the team has good WLB) Base: 123k 1st yr sign-on: 20k 2nd yr sign-on: 10k RSU: 100K 1st year TC: 168k/180k (without/with 10% bonus) 4yr average TC: 156k/168k (without/with 10% bonus) Microsoft recruiter said that this is the final offer and there will be no negotiations, and bonus can reach up to 20% base salary + $9000 stock, so potentially Microsoft TC is higher than Amazon Iâm wondering what I should consider when making a decision, what would you guys choose? Thanks! TC: 95k in MCOL #microsoft #amazon #alexa #azure
Thatâs a strong offer from MS. Congrats!
Actually MSFT doesn't pay this nice. I am at 61 and OP got a match.
@msft Thanks! I spent all of last year prepping for interviews so I'm really happy with both of these offers @shape security What do you mean by "got a match"?
Go microsoft. You will thank your younger self later.
Think about if you want to work/live in Redmond or Seattle
OP, that 20% yearly bonus at Microsoft is not guaranteed because it's only for a few top performers. Normally people get 10%.
Good to know, do you know how much an average performer would get in performance stock bonus?
If you perform at level you should get a 10% bonus.
As already mentioned, Microsoft benefits are way better. If youâre interested in the azure teamâs project then go with Microsoft for better wlb and a more sustainable growth trajectory. Too many horror stories from Alexa ppl
It looks like amazon has saturated. For 700k+ employees, it really difficult to even manage. Growth is dramatically difficult. At the same time, MSFT is growing crazy and still has a lot of space to do better with less efforts than what Amzn does just to stay
Most of those employees arenât in engineering
I know, even Msft has 140k+, thats doesn't mean all are eng. Which company has only engineers ?
If you voted Amazon, why Amazon? Seems like everyone in the comments is saying choose Microsoft
Bro, Amazon sucks at L4 and L5. All you get is đ. I have read a lot of horror stories and even my friends who got PIP'd. But one good thing is that you learn a lot. Amazon pressurize you to be productive. If you survive at Amzn for 2-3 yrs you can be good anywhere else. On the contrary, MSFT is totally chillax (chilling + relax). You wanna be super productive, you are welcome but you have to be pro-active for that. Everyone at MSFT has been here forever. Once you go MSFT, you chill in your life. Just wait and get all the perks. I hardly drive to work. I sit in the bus and take a nap most of the times đ
Ngl that sounds nice, would kinda prefer to focus on things outside work
I'd argue that some teams in Azure work as hard as in Amazon. That's including my team (one of the core ones) - I learned a ton, but pull on average well over 50+ hours a week.
You should decide based on whether you want to live in Seattle or the east side. If youâre young and want to go out and have fun, seattle. If youâre not in to that sort of thing, East side. Also if youâre Indian, there is a huge community on the east side - I have a friend who works downtown but still lives on the east side for this exact reason
How is the commute if I were to live in Seattle but commute to Redmond? I heard MS has a company shuttle, is there an app I can use to find shuttle stops
Yes, ms has shuttles. I know people who tried this and eventually moved to redmond because itâs just not worth it. Traffic can suck and shuttle wifi is unreliable. I myself almost stayed in seattle when I joined microsoft, but ultimately deemed it not worth it. Why pay $500+ more in rent to live in a smaller place, and have a 30-60 min commute each way? But I do wish I lived in seattle still, and may eventually leave microsoft for this and other reasons

You may want to pay for parking in Seattle Downtown. Also benefits at MSFT are crazy good. Check 401k, ESPP, Athletic Reimbursement. Amazon doesn't have ESPP and Athletic reimbursement. There 401k is also not that generous. So, if you add living costs differences and benefits differences, that around +20k for MSFT.
That makes a lot of sense! Thanks
401k is absolutely terrible, 2% matching and it takes 2 years to vest, otherwise you lose all your matching
