Hi everyone, my first post here on Blind. I'm really struggling to decide if I should jump ship from my current company (IBM) to Elastic. I graduated in April from a state university and had only been working in IBM for about six months. Just last week I got an offer from Elastic (the company behind Elastic search). I really need some input from you guys to make a decision. Stay in IBM: TC 100k in Austin (only base, no stock) Pros: Working in IBM cloud infrastructure (interesting work and technology, valuable experience), Very good colleagues (really love everyone in the team including my manager, the biggest reason I want to stay), chill wlb Cons: Worse compensation and benefits compared to other tech companies. Also IBM seems to get a worse reputation in the industry these days. Hard to get promoted. Everything is a bit slow. Accept Elastic Offer: TC 140K (base + stock) remote anywhere (but salary will get cut if moving to lcol areas. i.e. TC will be about 130k in Austin) Pros: Elastic sounds like a really cool company with a lot of potentials in its stock values. I will be working in the Elastic cloud team, which also seems good. Very good employee benefits (zero insurance pay for me and my family). A lot of career growth opportunities. Cons: Leaving a 6-months working experience on my resume might look bad. I have to give 10k sign-on bonus back to IBM since I leave within a year. Not sure if the team will be as nice as the team I have in IBM. Also, I would feel kinda sad for leaving my current IBM team. So in summary, the key reason that I want to stay at IBM is my nice team and interesting work, and the key reason that I want to go to Elastic is the company's good reputation and benefits & compensation. Please help me decide! #ibm #elastic #offer #amazon #microsoft #databricks #twitter #stripe #newgrad #capitalone #oracle #google #walmartlabs #mongodb #engineering #software #swe
Switch. IBM brings no value to your resume
Btw, this is your first job. It is not time for you to chill. Bust your ass for a few years and then chill.
This is pretty solid advice
It is not time for you to chill and WLB, it is time for you to grind and get to Google, FB or similar with nice comp like 500-600k and then chill and WLB and have kids ….
Leave. IBM will lay you off soon anyway. Their cloud is already a failure
I just interviewed with their cloud team 👀👀
My friend who works at Elastic loves it. He tells me about all the time off perks, like 7 (?) weeks of PTO, 1 week paid time off, covid PTO, every other friday off in the summer..sounds really nice
7 weeks seem a bit off. It is 4 weeks PTO + 1 week vto
Leave.
Once you leave ibm, you'll see how bad ibm actually is. Nice team, nice colleagues are everywhere and much smarter people who treat everyone with respect. Wlb can also be had by setting boundaries except in places like amzn. Also ibm will hire you back anyday if you don't like it.
Leaving after 6 months is totally fine on your resume, if you think it's not your fit and have a better opportunity. Good luck!
Thanks!

People who like Modi, are you okay with your country’s leader using words like “infiltrators” for a community?
See if elastic will cover your ibm sign on or negotiate a sign on with elastic to cover it. IBM is the past. Elastic is a forward move
