Help with Google Offer

Received an offer for Google L3 (currently in Amazon L5. Promoted 5 months back). Below are the details Base - 140000 Target Bonus - 15% Sign On - 20000 Stocks - 260000 over 4 years Current Amazon TC - 215000 Is it worth the downlevel? Work wise both Google and Amazon are same (technologies in both are something I want to work on) but I see more growth opportunities in Google. Can someone who was in a similar position and took the downlevel describe their experience? YOE - 2.3 #leetcode #amazon #google

Based on what you said: Higher TC is a better factor to base this decision on than level. HC is generally fair with leveling.

Just to get more opinions on this - Do you think the difference in TC (and the work as described above) is worth the switch?

VMware Santa 🎅🏻 Feb 18, 2020

You already said the work is equally good in both. So the next question should be, do you like both managers equally? How about WLB? If these factors are equally good at either team then TC can be the tie breaker. Level doesn’t matter this early on. Putting more in 401k and compounding returns matters more.

It’s the right level

Amazon PtRU81 OP Feb 18, 2020

So do you think it's worth the switch just based on higher TC?

Dont take it. Google made you a new grad offer. All your peers will be right out off college. You will be upset from day 1 if you take that offer. Google downlevels aggressively, more then any other company. If your unhappy at Amazon, try applying elsewhere. Lots of good companies out there. FB will give E4 offer.

Amazon PtRU81 OP Feb 18, 2020

I thought the new grad offer is around 170k. Current offer is way more than that. Correct me if I am wrong :)

This is a high L3 offer, but it's still L3, that's a problem. You'll get easy projects they give freshers. It's never a good idea to take a step back in your career.

Amazon neo-matrix Feb 18, 2020

Note that you may get promoted in short time which will give you another pay raise If you are not too much worried about levels then you should take it

Microsoft SwiftSock Feb 18, 2020

If you think you’re downleveled, take the L3 offer, knock it out of the park and get promoted. You’ll make much more TC at Goog over time with bonuses and refreshers.

Microsoft quittin Feb 18, 2020

Absolutely, I have seen those who were under-leveled in microsoft given multiple promos in 1-2 year period to fix level.

Microsoft quittin Feb 18, 2020

Generally companies don’t want to underlevel because fixing the level will pull out from promo budget and cause overall dissatisfaction in team - so if you are under leveled (you think ) you will show with your results and they have to promote you fast

TC is more important than title. Take it.

Bloomberg Enig16 Feb 18, 2020

Level or title? Because if level, that’s definitely not the case since higher level means higher growth means much higher future TC.

Amazon RiQc20 Feb 18, 2020

Does it matter? Can you buy anything with your level/title? Take the $$$
