This is my #1 priority. I want to become a manager eventually and I want to learn by example. I’ve read about manager pulse scores that you can see but I was wondering if there were any other ways I can select for a great manager.

Reading people is a very important skill and yet near impossible to teach, you will learn by experience. If you want to be a manager someday, you better start working on this. It's hard to itemize what makes a manager great from a short talk, best you can capture is passion and minimum competence.

At the bare minimum check if the manager has been around at FB for a couple of years and ask to see the pulse score. Try to detect how much he's interested in the current team/projects. Ask if he/she has grown someone to become E6/M1, as this is an eventual desire of yours.

You can cross check things with how engs feel about the team as well.

It's pretty important to ask why in all aspects of life, not just career. It isnt disparaging for someone to ask that question, so you really shouldnt take it as an insult.
You can lie in anything in life. If a dentist asks you how often you brush your teeth, you can lie; but as with a lot of things, I really dont see the point.

Thanks for sharing! Sadly from my experience, managing is more about politics than helping other people. If your goal is to help other people; thats a really noble goal; but I'd really recommend starting to learn the game; because no matter how nice your intentions are, if you cant get that promo or the career growth for your team, itll ultimately stunt your growth.

@dist, It's annoying to see that question as the first response whenever someone posts a question about E to M transition. It's okay to add that question with something more useful. But that question itself is not a valid answer and just a waste of time, just like this exchange 🤣 (given that you don't seem to be someone who can take a valid feedback)

Find managers who have promoted other team members to managers before. That proves they know how to do it. If they've done it more than once, even better.
