Thinking of building a house vs buying. Just thinking now. That way, we can design it the way we want. Don’t have any clue about buying any land either yet but we can figure it out. Interested in learning tips and experiences from people who have done so. We are in Seattle.
Heard it’s complicated and a long drawn out process which needs constant monitoring. Not easy to do while working

You can find houses under construction and pre-buy it. You usually get the ability to customize quite a lot while still letting the builder worry about construction. If you build your own, you’ll have to deal with permits, contractors and all that mess. The people I know who’ve done it spent years on it.
This is a great idea! Any recommendations for builders ?
Any new construction, just buy in the initial days of that phase. You can customize few things but can't alter the plan itself.

Unless your spouse works at FB, don’t build. You will need lot of money for unexpected expenses. Since you are in microsoft, I assume you won’t have any issue spending your time and energy.
My wife designed a house for someone, just the drawings. That was the easy part. All other aspects of the construction seem to have constant challenges and surprises... Definitely not worth the stress. Just like any other thing, you need to evaluate buy vs make. From an outsider perspective, I wouldn't do it.
Thanks
I didn’t, two close friends friends who did and they regret it. Financially doesn’t work, lifestyle goes to hell, timing is bad, illusion is high.
Thanks
It's difficult to secure mortgage for land/old building with intent to build new. You need lot more down.
