High paying companies for leadership roles in New York

Mar 12, 2021 30 Comments

Currently M2 at Facebook (L7 equivalent). Not happy with politics in my org and we have been thinking about moving to the east coast due to personal reasons. Not interested in pre-ipo companies unless they are relatively low risk like Stripe. What public non-FAANG companies pay good comp for management roles in the New York area? Finance companies like two sigma, jane street don't seem to hire managers externally. Apple, Microsoft, Netflix don't have much presence in New York. Amazon is there but not sure if they will match this even for director roles.

Twitter, Apple, Google, LinkedIn. Apart from these if New York is what you want then you have to downgrade to lower tier tech companies. Although, I’d doubt the TC cut would justify your case.

Reasons for leaving Bay Area is because it’s expensive ?

Yea I think in general more opportunities in Bay Area.

Reason for leaving for us is personal. My wife and I used to live in New York and life was a lot more social and it was definitely more happening. In Bay Area, even in SF, it's much more laid back and quiet and we prefer the New York scene.

+1 for tech director at Amazon definitely crossing 1M with stock inflation. My guess is >60% exceed 1M without stock inflation since external hires get in at L8.5 (stupid Amazon and Tech practice).

YOE? Can you talk about your career path..

    Good luck

Nice trajectory. Well it is team dependent as you might imagine. Most directors at Amazon I've worked with tend to be super busy and juggling an insane number of strings in their hands, but I've seen some trying to take it easy.

      A few things:

Think of Amazon tech directors as Facebook directors with twice as much maturity and experience. Pretty solid bunch of leaders overall, more so than peers in big Tech.

If you're in an established team in retail, you might get drawn into a lot of escalation, optimization, operational heavy projects/meetings. Peak(s) are unavoidable so you might want to avoid.

If you're in AWS, you might get away for a short while then pressured to deliver impact and products before re:invent catches up fast.

Alexa (decent presence in the Northeast) used to be messy but now is a blend of operational, new launch and research teams. You can find some nice spots there maybe in research + engineering teams.

Even best are new initiatives where they take it easy on you for a year or two but there tends to be fewer of those.
