I’m making a good TC for an Amazon L7 SDM (550, mostly RSUs, top ratings every year, Seattle) but I have kids going to college in two years and am wondering if I should make a move to one of the better paying FAANG companies. Has anyone else left a decent paying, interesting leadership role to chase (bad choice of words, investigate earning more) the money (while still in an impactful role)? How did it work out? For my colleagues in similar roles ( managing ~80 people) what does your TC look like assuming you sell your stock and don’t sit on it? - Updated- Lots of good comments. Thread devolved! I am fortunate, no argument there. Yes, I could swing it on my income. Top tier schools are starting to hit 50k+/year per student. 4 kids, so looking at a fair amount of money if I pay the bill. I should have saved more, but my comp grew a lot once I joined Amazon. My old comp was much lower. It is ok if I don’t pay, but if I can I would like to try. This is not the only reason to make more money. I would be quite happy to retire earlier and buy a nicer home, travel more ... that is just an immediate cost coming up. I have a decent gig, no complaints. If I can have a similar role for significantly more comp, why not?
Let your kids pay for their own education. This is United States of America my friend.
True. My student loans hounded me for a long time and I wish I could have started my career without that hanging over my head. But you are right, they will be fine even if I can’t foot the bill.
Letting your kids pay for their own education is why America (and the rest of the West) is falling behind.
Did you only just start thinking about paying for college? If so, then yeah, you probably want to max things out salarywise, especially if they go to private school since total cost can be upwards of 65k a year these days
Have been saving for a while, but if I can keep them from taking out any loans I would like to help them start out debt-free.
If your only aim is to make money at that level you would be pretty bad hire.
I don’t think that I said that, but if it came off that way I miscommunicated. I would like to have an interesting role where I add value, but if I can do so at a higher comp that would be a big plus.
I don't get why 550 isn't enough here. College isn't cheap but it's 200 at most for 4 years in most places
I am wondering that why 550K TC isn’t enough for college tution. And if it’s not enough then how much is enough
I you can’t pay for college on 500k you’re not “doing it right.”
Something doesn’t add up , you know there are single income <200k $ families with 2 kids going to college and still happy
Most of us have to save for over a decade for college, not pay it out of our salary. OP you must not have planned or budgeted well.
If you cannot pay for kids with such a high TC what about others ?
Dude, how many kids do you have, if around 50- 60 then yes - you need find better paying job
**random honest comment** Joined Blind less than 48 hours ago and I continue to be amazed at the folks (like you) here.. Still confused whether it should be daunting or inspirational 🤔🤔
It is a butt ton of money compared to my previous role in a financial services company, if that’s what you mean. However, market rates are pretty good here these days.
