Highest paying hardware positions

Aug 29, 2019 156 Comments

Just curious what the top paying positions in Hardware are.

EDIT: I am also looking for breakdown by specialization. Such as Analog designer versus digital versus mixed signals... or are they all the same?

If you want to work defense or govt (space or whatever), I would do contracting instead (Lockheed, Raytheon, Northrop, Boeing, etc.). You can do the same work and get paid more. However if you care about TC, stay in tech or anything else literally.

The NASA core avionics HW engineer gets paid less than 100k 😂
But yeah it gets amortized to >300k$/yr if you work on core scientific algorithms as a SWE or researcher at NASA since you leave after 2 years and work on Wall St.

This, I am in firmware which isn't quite hw but pays worse than pure swe. My experience is sw company wanting to build HW pays better than HW centric companies.

HW centric companies seem to respect electrical engineering and computer engineering degrees, especially PhDs. They have little idea what to do with CS people.

Boeing is a pretty good example of that, I have a buddy who switched from an SE to an EE for a nice pay bump after 1 YoE.

      Vulgar, yes.

HW centric companies will get their EE’s to write the code and I think that’s part of the problem.

I wouldn’t tar all Google HW engineers with the same brush. Some of them are darn good, most are average. However, due to Google’s schizophrenic product management and lack of institutional endurance, they are subject to failed HW products one after the other.

Yes it is true that Google has some good hw engg.s but they seem to have very little say in overall product direction. And Google’s policy of basically promoting generalist swes doesn’t quite work with hw products.

HW at FB, MSFT and apple are all less than SWE, period. Unless it's a high demand low supply role like silicon specific roles with high experience, in which case, is much higher than SWE.

350k isn't necessarily BS if it includes signing bonus which @microsoft says it does. My first year TC at NV was 300k fresh out of PhD. Of course I had competing offers and I negotiated.

20 YOE, HW, $210TC... The Apple engineers who brag about making bank have been there long enough to benefit from stock appreciation. Out the door, Apple pay is on the low side.

As a general rule of thumb, for the same level HW ~ 0.9xSW w.r.t base/bonus, and 0.5-0.7x w.r.t RSU. For SW, see levels.fyi, and you can calculate HW.
If you’re talking about higher positions like distinguished engineers, etc., then it’s an entire different story.

How well does the bootcamp route go vs a CS? I know a big part of it is your portfolio and skillset, but are companies actually not necessarily looking for degrees anymore?

I do respect HW folks for the amazing design, optimisation, simulation, architecture, power, frequency ect ... always pushing the limits of physics boundaries ...most SW folks seem lazy compare HW guys.

  • American Express vista133
HW development is way more complex than SW, it is also more stressful and has bigger impact when it comes to release a product.

However companies make recurring revenue with SW that is higher than HW product sales. That explains the difference in salary in favor of SW guys.

At Broadcom, with the help of bonus and RSU, it is pretty easy to get TC > 250k, but the drawback is they are extremely tight on headcount and job security is always a big concern.

Target Rsu refresher is 90% of base on average. Lower levels get less, higher levels get more % of base.
