Currently: 185k TC in LA, and Im still young (mid-20s) I have a rare offer for a Princeton PHD in CS, right now I have a liberal arts bachelors. What should I do ? Long term, a PhD sounds worth it, but maybe I don't need it? Goal: i really want to save up and invest in creating simple machine learning apps that are doing SaaS. Maybe I can tailor my PhD research to tech I can later commercialize ? Or drop out if my company makes enough profit? Thanks
It really depends on what you want to do with the PhD.
At some point no one will care or know where you went to school. That usually happens as soon as you graduate. So take that into account.
True for Bachelor and Masters, PhD is kinda like this but not exactly, the reputation of the lab and your advisor is how people would think of you before they actually get to know you. Of course this doesn’t apply if you’re in an industry irrelevant to your PhD, but why on earth would u do that?
Also, he’s not really asking if he should go to Princeton over another school. He’s asking if he should do a PhD program or stay working. Meaning - should he go where there are the top research advisors to learn more about the product he wants to create, or stay the path on his own.
Go for Princeton PhD.
I would say go to Phd and find a co-founder for an idea that can change the boring tech industry, start your tech company by applying to ycombinator.
Based on your goal, I would not do a PhD. I don’t see a benefit other than being able to call yourself a doctor. It sounds like you’re already on your way to achieving your goal, keep focused, experiment, and keep hacking. I tried to start companies while I was in grad school, found it hard to find ppl willing to risk it on a startup coming straight from undergrad (because of student loans, financial obligations)
Princeton is an amazing university. Do it.
You can always get the free masters and then decide.
Do you really like to do research? This is an important question.
80% of people showing off TC here cannot get PhD in CS. Even for the ones who have, 90% are not in the same tier as Princeton.
Who cares if they can or cannot. Depends on the goals, it's not a who-can-get-top-10-cs-phd game. It's very likely that Satya Nadella could not get a top cs phd.
