Recently I attended Atlassian face to face interview. Before that I cleared telephonic coding round. Face to face rounds went well. After that I didn't get any response from recruiter for one week. When I reached out to recruiter they mentioned that debrief did not happen and it will happen tomorrow. I expected update from recruiter next day but that also didn't happen. Finally after several follow up they mentioned that feedback was positive and they will proceed for next steps. But suddenly I get update from recruiter that the position was filled. I asked why I was called when the position was already filled. Recruiter had no answer but mentioned that another team has an opening and their recruiter will call me and they scheduled a meeting with the new recruiter. But no one called. I updated the previous recruiter about this and again she scheduled a meeting with the new recruiter. Again no call. I was frustrated and sent a mail asking to both the recruiters why they harass the candidates like that. Their response was that they can not match my salary expectations as I never mentioned my salary expectations. I don't understand why they called me in the first place when they know my current salary and they think that they can not offer better salary. I am new to Bay area and first time I am searching job in Bay area. Does this kind of thing happen in other companies too?
Not sure what is the charm in working for a dashboard/ticket management company 🤣🤣🤣
They think people come for Noah wasmer. They are seduced by his long hair
Recruiters are paid to play this kind of shitty games. They can keep saying 10 candidates that offer letter is bring prepared for 1 position until 1 guy actually joins
Why do you take this personally? Let’s assume you get this offer letter and the company gave the offer letter only to you, and is expecting you to sign. You are waiting for an offer letter from google as well. In the last minute you decide google is better and you just go ahead and take that. Congratulations to you but the company just wasted a whole lot of time and money. Let’s look at What kind of resources have they spent so far in trying to fill this position? Writing and posting a job description on all appropriate channels ($300) Reviewing ~100 or more resumes ($1250) About 15% of those resumes need to be phone screened, so roughly 15 phone screens ($2250) Around 75% of those initial phone screens warrant a technical screen, so roughly 11 technical screens ($9000) About 30% pass through to an on-site, so roughly 3 onsites. These onsites require the coordination of 6-7 employees ($10800) Finally, they make one offer. The recruiter (and potentially the executive staff) need to spend time on the phone with the offeree convincing and negotiating. ($900) All-in-all this process took about 45 days from start to finish. Now say you end up turning down their offer. They’ve spent over $24,000 just extending this single offer to you (to say nothing of opportunity costs), and now they’ll essentially have to start over from scratch. Now to answer your question - why even call you? Well in the case that other people don’t accept the position and you were the only person who they have in the pipeline, well in that case they will beat your salary. They can’t beat it until they have to. Don’t think you are the only person who is interviewing at multiple places. They are interviewing multiple people as well. And assume that there is someone always smarter than you who is either foolish or just ready to work for peanuts. Rejection is part of interviewing. Keep calm and move on. No need of burning bridges by emailing the recruiters and explain your frustration. They don’t owe you anything
Rejection is part of interview process. I am fine with that. But not calling after scheduling a call is bit unfair.
“But suddenly I get an update from the recruiter that the position was filled”. This part answers your question. They informed you fair and square. It’s because you didn’t let it go, they suggested another team and handled it poorly. I’m not defending their mistake. I’m saying that you didn’t have to burn any bridge by calling them out. Either way I’m sorry this happened to you . Good luck with your search
“Telephonic coding round”... just call it a phone screen.
😀
Don't take it personally. The recruiter has nothing to do with this. The preference is always given to an internal hire. Be happy they considered you for another team.

28 terrorist worshipping idiots just got themselves fired and I've never been prouder to work at Google.
Yeah, this is quite the norm. Have faced similar situations with two well funded billion dollar startups. The worst thing I noticed when I was interviewing was that even though your interviews would go well, most companies would keep interviewing for a week or two to filter through everyone in their pipeline but I never quite understood the point of that. Good companies tend to make an offer the very next day because they know that good candidates wouldn't be available for long. I have hear Atlassian low-ball and play these kind of games to negotiate with candidates. It's a shame that you have to keep going to the recruiters to get updated about your situation. For all the tech and making things better in the Bay, the recruiting and hiring system itself seems irreparable. Keep interviewing with other companies. There must be something better out there waiting for you. All the best!
