I'm planning to move to the bay area to work for FB. Planning to buy a house under 1M. School district not a concern since we don't have kids yet.

Please share your thoughts on Newark/Hayward area in terms of safety/commute (Shuttles)/pricing

I know you said you don't care about schools but the school rating often indicates the safety and cleanliness of the neighborhood. I would not buy in Hayward or anything north of Union City in the East Bay. Honestly if you're only interested in new construction under 1M, you're SOL. My wife and I are just finishing up a purchase in Newark for a freshly renovated home in a nice neighborhood for 1.275M.

FB is opening office near Newark, so you could ask relocation there once they open. after that you won't even have to cross the bridge.

  • Hayward is a scary place unless you live on the golf course in which case you are spending above $1m.. try Fremont

Skip Hayward, go for Newark if you must choose between the two. Bits of Newark, Fremont, and Union City are adjacent to 84 so Dumbarton is easy access if you're working on the Penn.

Just as an fyi: new homes are not without their problems
