Housing advice for new bay area resident
I start at FB at the beginning of September (TC 320k signing bonus 50k) and would like some advice on where to live. I grew up in Chicago but have been living in suburbia for the past 8 years and am pretty done with it. I've been on active duty in the USAF for that entire time and don't really have a good idea of what I can afford and where the good places are for single 28 year old white guy with a dog, motorcycles, and car. I'm guessing I'll have to get rid of my vehicle(s) before I get there which is ok but would be nice if I could keep at least one. Any advice on areas to look in and what kind of prices I should be looking for? I am VA loan eligible and have my funding fee waived due to disabled vet status so I can buy a house with low/no down payment but am open to renting. Currently pay $2200 for 900sqft 2br house in Hawaii.
Also just want to point out that the FB shuttle map thing on the onboarding page is pretty awful and I might be too stupid to navigate it correctly but I can't really tell where the shuttles go to geographically.

Especially if you’re gonna work at FB, which pays equally everywhere across the country.
Rent may be low there and it isn't far from Palo Alto downtown to hangout. One of the better downtown with decent late night hangout in south bay.

I do not support this, what is an alternative? It will be good to learn more.
