Planning on leaving my first job for a better opportunity soon. How have you guys quit in the past? - Scheduling a 1-1 with your manager and giving them a paper notice? - Verbally explaining when you plan to leave? - Do you justify why you're leaving or tell them what company you're going to? - Do you mention anything about compensation? - Do you let them define the duration of your resignation (two weeks vs one week vs tomorrow) or do you mention it yourself and hope they agree? - Do you start to plan for your resignation (documentation, off-loading, etc) before the actual conversation?
A brief 1-2 lines including your name, current date and last working day is the bare minimum. Recommend 2 weeks notice but some places will walk you out anytime after your notice so be prepared financially and mentally.
How long have you worked there. Curious.

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?

Avoid teams with only Chinese or Indians especially with a Chinese/Indian manager
1. Type up an email. Don't send it yet. 2. Schedule a 1:1 with manager and tell them you plan to quit. All you need to tell them is you are leaving fire a better opportunity. How much you choose to disclose is up to you. Depending on whether your state has at-will employment, you can give a day's notice. Unless you're miserable at your current job, I recommend 2 weeks to transition things. 3. After meeting, send email.
