Basically the title, at ibm the application process for i140 depends entirely on your manager which is like conflict of interest because if they apply too soon, employees get it done and leave. So now a lot of managers are hiding behind getting approvals from vp, hr etc. (Which they have to) but they won't do it until very last 2 (or maybe 3) remaining years. They'll also make you beg for it because ibm managers get off on it as they have no other skills, and have a lot of time on their hands. Then they take a looong time to submit required documents. It took my manager 4 months to submit some documents regarding job description which he had previously submitted for others. 4 FUCKING MONTHS!! (Yes this has to be done by managers because ibm doesn't pay fragomen enough money!!) After this there's fragomen nightmare. IBM pays such a low fee to fragomen that they do not even do the application right away. After 2 months the lawyer replied "i am working on it" (WTF!) . It's not their fault though because ibm applications are low priority. My colleague got an rfe because manager made a mistake and because of that their application was selected for audit as well which delayed their application by atleast a year. People on opt /h1b please do not join ibm if your i140 is pending. #workvisa #i140 #gc
Sad, immigration related paperwork of my team members are a high priority item for me. As someone who has been through it, it is ridiculous how anyone can try to take advantage of those in this position.
Honest question: do you file GC for employee if u think u can hire similar profile from market who is USC?
Thanks for being a decent human and doing the right thing.
My friend I hope you’re doing well and your post gets more traction. I’m not in US (in other side of fence) but still ran into issues with IBM regarding immigration. I’ve spoken to few other colleagues and close friends at IBM US and they all mentioned the same thing. They purposefully slow down immigration so the employee doesn’t leave. This is downright illegal. And shameful. In Canada, it was also delayed initially. But the difference in Canada is that you apply for it yourself and you submit documents yourself. Thankfully my manager was able to get the documents I needed quickly. Hopefully your immigration issues get sorted out. It is a huge sigh of relief once you are done :) Godspeed
Afaik canada immigration doesn't depend a lot on employer, in usa everything depends on employers. We cant file for perm residency by ourselves, ibm is taking advantage of this. The practice itself is just above those slave labors in middle east whose passport is taken away so they can't return to their home countries. Fuking shameful for a company that goes on and on about diversity and inclusion.
Why do you think it is illegal? The business prob just doesn’t want to pay the lawyer fees yet. They know you are using them for immigration, and they are using you for your labor.
Adding to my post* There are teams in ibm (usa) that have issues with retaining US college grads because they all leave in 2-3 years (if ever they join ibm anymore) , maybe most of the teams have this issue so they hire people on visa and then do this shit to keep them at ibm. Seriously, this fuking sucks and kills someones career and has significant impact on an immigrants life.
Yet you still went there because it was the best option you had at the time.
I wasn't aware of this practice and i wish someone had told me this. Which is what i am doing
How many years you have left on your H1B? If it's just more than 2 years, it's worth moving out.
I never approached my ibm manager to sponsor gc. I had issues with TN sponsorship. I have been with ibm for 7 years. I am surprised that you even discuss this option. My understanding is that for the past 5 years Ibm sponsored appr 659 green cards
I was always declined by IBM saying we don’t sponsor.. wow do they do h1b transfers ?
It's team dependent at ibm, that's another reason you shouldn't join. You can't switch teams either after going there.
Thanks for letting community know..
You are Indian bro. Your green card was always sabotaged and ibm has nothing to do with it.
So if i am indian the company shouldn't even file for my gc? Visa queue is different issue.
We should make a list of companies who file PERM/I-140 really late (bad immigration support)
I am totally up for it. How do we do this?
We would just ask blinders about their employers policies if that is okah or something like that.
Wow, fuck them. I'm so glad I left IBM, good riddance. So many useless non-technical managers who spend their time micromanaging shitty products that no one uses
Yes! Most ibm managers are non-tech and have so much time on their hands to do all this shit instead of building products. During layoffs (very common at ibm), tech people are laid off and these managers remain unharmed.

The end of Backdoor Roth?!
I thought people don't join IBM either way. Only desperation drives individuals towards IBM.
Yes but lot of clg grads join ibm because they give some extra 10k or something compared to other(non fang, non tier2) offers. Especially those on opt, because they also have time limit to find a job. I pray that they find this message somehow and never join
I’m in Canada. IBM is one of the top employers in Toronto. They hire around 250-300 year long interns every year and 80% of them are from the top two unis in Canada
