How actively do you make trades in your 401(k)?

I’m not an active trader. I want to ask questions before I make any changes.

I’m curious how actively everyone is trading in their employer-sponsored accounts, and what types of trades you’ve utilized to get you the best performance. I’ll detail my current situation below.

ERISA-compliant 401(k) through Fidelity, employer provided options include company stock, and about 15 mutual funds, some with target dates, others with names describing the blend of investments.

6% employer match, 1:1, 3 year cliff vest (I’ll be vested in July 2018. Approximately 1/3 of my balance is not vested.

Account performance shows +11.10% YTD

Option to move up to 50% of balance to BrokerageLink to trade individual stocks or any fund I wish (not a withdrawal, no penalty or tax invoked)

So far as I can tell, I have not been aware of any fee for trades I’ve made.

I look at my 401k quarterly. It’s a long term investment so it doesn’t make sense to change up the trades. Mutual funds tend to be a collection of stocks as is anyway.

If you want to trade individual stocks use something like RobinHood or open a brokerage account somewhere.

I use a target date fund for my 401k so I don't have to trade manually

Quarterly review. Hire a personal financial consultant to review options with you. It costs less than $500 for an analysis... Many funds over lap and you may be less diversified than you think.

Make sure you check the rules on how frequent you can trade in your retirement accounts. There are limits imposed on retirement accounts that don’t apply to normal brokerage accounts.

I use Blooom and it makes updates to my portfolio based on my risk profile. Love it!
