they advertise themselves the ability to "speed up team delivery", "eliminate technical roadblocks", "coach developers". Now with the exception of SWEs who act as SM, how can a dude with a business degree and past experience as QA/BA/photographer/front desk reception can help, or even understand, anything technical? My team has had 3 SMs in the past year. The only technical word they know is "C plus plus". They spend their time watching cat videos on youtube all day, and write bs motivational "leadership thoughts" blog posts in the internal Confluence. What exactly do they "coach" devs? Dynamic programming or Haskell? It's amazing that this Snake Oil charlatan as a profession has proliferated our industry and people just accept them just as the world accepted AIDS 50 years ago.
A scrum master is meant to be a dev who happened to take a two day course
What do you think about scrum masters who arent developers at all.
Yeah Scrum Master isn't supposed to be a job title.
H1B Scrum Masters? You've gotta be shitting me. If that's true, I'm voting Trump. This is too far.
Trump can't do much anyway without Congress. The best he's done so far is crippling processing speed with more checks and hurdles. But the underlying immigration laws have not changed.
Trump is in control of enforcement. H1b is and always was a great scheme. The laws were never properly enforced. It’s meant for high skill engineers, not these Infosys contractors.
Scrum is a scam, but it’s a best hidden secret. It’s the same crop of people who were six sigma black belts, plus a bunch of PM who got the certificate from scrum. Scrum is not the only scam going on. There’s new breed emerging, kanban. There’ll be more. It’s always like that. These people are not in tech only, they’re everywhere in business
Lol my SM watches cat video all day
To a certain degree I feel the same about the armies of PMs
Scrum has a good basis but it’s only successful if the whole org takes on working that way. And if the whole org is working that way you probably don’t need a scrum master. Kanban is the same. All of these “methodologies” just look good on a whiteboard for the c levels who walk around the office and see all the post it notes in uniform on walls. To be agile requires a complete mindset change and where it’s successful is where the companies has embraced it. When one team decides to do “scrum” it’s never going to work. TLDR - it’s all about setting deadlines and making people stick to deadlines!
I bet Boeing 787 max was agile developed
https://conferences.computer.org/stc/2013/papers/0001a022.pdf you can't make this stuff up
I've worked in a company with dedicated scrum masters before and they've been wholly useless. Most were, like OP mentioned, former receptionists "retrained" to "do scrum", which really just meant adding more useless meetings to continue justifying their existences. Really disgusting, I'm glad I don't have to deal with useless people in my new company and team.
good for you buddy. I heard Uber run its ships pretty tight so no room for parasites and coasters make sense.
Weak managers hire scrum masters to yell at you to work faster because they are afraid to do it themselves.
They coach you on how to move a dev story to "In progress/blocked/done" .Rinse and repeat. Our SM copy/pastes the technical jargon from a dev's chat window and passes it others who questions him anything tech. We also have an entire team of Agile coaches sitting in Tijuana, who apparently do nothing but coach teams day in/out. The irony doesn't end there :( They coach us to be pretty rigid in following Agile without letting the team decide anything for themselves.
what's your company? can u pls share
Introduce deadlines, and then tell you that you have to meet them. Thats all.
The this is. This is important. Really important. If they do this it’s worth more than an additional Dev or two on a project. It takes a specific personality type. Zero fucks to give and a maniacal focus on process. But it can work. Don’t get me wrong, it usually doesn’t work. But when it does it works well.
Why can’t your manager do that?
