I'm in mid 30s. TC 90K and title is Sr. Analyst. I've made some transitions in my career and had to make some detour to settle for visa/green card so I'm a little behind in terms of my career growth. After I started my current job, my leader left the company and his role got never replaced. Other team members started leaving the company too and now I'm the only one left from my original team. Stupid enough, I thought this will give me a chance for a promotion since I'm the only one who knows how to do the job. Instead, they transferred me to another team that has little to do with my actual job. At this point, I have very little chance of getting promoted because the most important thing for promotion is your boss rooting for you at the politics game and my new boss admittedly doesn't know how to handle my type of work. (imagine the chef of the kitchen got a server in his team. serving customers is related to the restaurant industry and but the chef has no knowledge on how to operate the hall vs. kitchen) I really tried to proactively identify my projects, support others even on stupid things and innovate a lot of processes but my job doesn't get appreciated mostly because people don't really understand my job (i work in business intelligence team) I know it's easy to say, "oh just move to another job" but I've already moved so much and every time I moved, my promotion clock gets reset and promotion gets further away. Also I have to admit, I've never been promoted at any job so I'm a little obsessed over that. So my preference is to stay at my current company: although my boss and I are not great, I get along with the people and people value me at least. Do you have any tips on pushing promotion in this situation?
Play hardball, be prepared to walk.
OP, I just want to say that I empathize. I’m also in my 30’s, BI Analyst, TC $95k, never been promoted before. Have been laid off 3 times in my life due to budget/ down-sizing/ RIF. Always made lateral-type moves to new companies with the hope of climbing the ladder. I think if you lost your champion, you might be screwed. Start looking around at outside opps. If you’re really good at what you do, you should have no problem finding a new Sr. Analyst position. Maybe even look at a smaller company where you could have more impact and move up faster? Just make sure to research the hell out of the company before interviewing/ accepting. This is what I have seen peers do. At least you have *time* to do a proper search and get a few offers on the table while you have a job. ...but what do I know? 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♀️😂 Just about to start a new analyst role after a RIF. C’est la vie... 💫
You find a better job.
Internal transfer for promotion...though legacy corp like that will probably cap you at 20% raise.
Get out.
I sell analytics software. So while I don’t do your job directly, it’s literally my job to secure new investment for BI teams. I feel like your post doesn’t look at the big picture. If a project is stupid, you shouldn’t be working on it. You’re the only one on your team. What are they going to do? You have so much leverage to control what systems get made. If I were you, I’d focus on creating as much value for the company as possible through your skill set. By actually improving your company in a visible way, you’ll pave the way for title advancements and pay increases. Take control of this situation. Use your leverage to build awesome shit. When you have awesome shit to talk about in your reviews, you’ll probably get promoted. Keep doing that.
Yikes 90K - you need to quit the media industry
