How can you push for promotion when the office politics is not on my side
I'm in mid 30s. TC 90K and title is Sr. Analyst.
I've made some transitions in my career and had to make some detour to settle for visa/green card so I'm a little behind in terms of my career growth.
After I started my current job, my leader left the company and his role got never replaced.
Other team members started leaving the company too and now I'm the only one left from my original team. Stupid enough, I thought this will give me a chance for a promotion since I'm the only one who knows how to do the job. Instead, they transferred me to another team that has little to do with my actual job.
At this point, I have very little chance of getting promoted because the most important thing for promotion is your boss rooting for you at the politics game and my new boss admittedly doesn't know how to handle my type of work. (imagine the chef of the kitchen got a server in his team. serving customers is related to the restaurant industry and but the chef has no knowledge on how to operate the hall vs. kitchen)
I really tried to proactively identify my projects, support others even on stupid things and innovate a lot of processes but my job doesn't get appreciated mostly because people don't really understand my job (i work in business intelligence team)
I know it's easy to say, "oh just move to another job" but I've already moved so much and every time I moved, my promotion clock gets reset and promotion gets further away. Also I have to admit, I've never been promoted at any job so I'm a little obsessed over that.
So my preference is to stay at my current company: although my boss and I are not great, I get along with the people and people value me at least.
Do you have any tips on pushing promotion in this situation?
