How did get your next role after being unemployed for some time?

Maybe you were PIPed, fired, or laid off (not on leave). How did you get that next role (referrals, simply applying, etc)? What are some of the things you mentioned to the recruiters/hiring managers explaining that "gap" in your resume (Being honest or lying)? What did you do in your free time besides LC and interviewing? What type of company did you end up going to (FAANG, unicorn/recent IPO, startup, old tech/consulting, etc)? Any additional information would help. Note: I've been given my lay off notice recently and I'm looking for my next role. I've been fumbling screenings and onsites :( TC: $100k YOE: 2 NYC

Helped someone with referrals. *Referral* is the big help one can do to someone who got laid off. It really worked with couple of interviews and one clicked. Person got in after an year of gap. Person was honest in explaining the reason and gap and was doing sincere learning and Leetcode.

Thanks!

Sorry to hear it

Remember, without Leetcode, one is not even in the discussion. Once proved competent, my referrals did half the work.

Is there an online network where people are willing to give referrals?

Just say gap time was spent traveling

I do need a vacation. It's been so long.

I spent time doing some introspection, reflecting on what I was passionate about. My early interviews showed I had an interviewing skill gap, so I plugged that with daily training, basically making that my full time job. By the end, I would nail the interviews, ended up with multiple offers. My answer to the gap was, I was in no rush. I had time, and I explained I prioritized taking time to figure things out, making sure that I found the right match between my passion and the jobs offered. Best of luck! Ps, I used hired(dot)com to get good interviews.

Thank you so much! I definitely haven't felt passionate about the roles I had here. I need to see what I like and start building and learning from there.

I remember NYC has special law forbidding this kind of questions as a result of 2008

They can't ask the question, but it doesn't mean they don't take the gap into consideration when they make the hiring decision.

If you can do mobile development, set up your own company and publish a couple of nice apps. It's not going to be profitable but it looks better on your resume. It is also a good learning experience.

I’ve never had to explain anything.
