When I answered ‘$ and strong eng culture’ at Lyft phone screen I got rejected, that’s why I’m looking for suggestions. Got fb, airbnb, google, uber onsites in a week. 1 YOE TC: 110k
Does the project motivate you? If money is your only driver become a banker. The engineers that succeed in tech are passionate about what they build (solving complex problems, making something new, fixing a problem).
Well, I believe I absolutely love using fb and Uber sounds too generic and bs
What is the scope of the Org or team you would be joining? It is better if you mention details. Let's say you are joining Google Maps. You could say you are excited to help people find new restaurants they will like and know when to go so it isn't busy. And you find the challenge of keeping this information of the physical world up to date and truthful in your digital one very interesting.
I'll craft the perfect answer for each of these companies but you gotta pay for it
If you said $ you are a doofus and good for them to reject you.
Sad but true! If hiring teams don't appreciate honesty, they're fooling themselves. That's the sad part. Don't ever mention your needs!
Are you in engineering or Bay Area? 110 TC seems low
I work for an unknown startup in the Bay Area.
SWE?
Ehis pretentiousness is so annoying. Everyone knows deep down that everyone in tech is there for the money, yet no one will admit.
By making your answer more specific to the company, you can demonstrate that you've done your homework. If you're applying for some application role, you can talk about how the specific product is great from a user perspective or solves an interesting problem or adds a lot of business value. If you're applying for a infrastructure role, you can talk about how x tool is cool or about your interest in a specific scaling challenge or about their interaction with the open source community.
I feel that question and answer should come up pre-offer.
