How do annual awards work at Microsoft?

I will be joining Microsoft soon. The recruiter told me I am eligible for up to 48k in stock grants annually. I understand he said "up to". What should be the general expectations for a all positive performance review if I meet all expectations? Another question, what is the annual stock awards vesting schedule? The compensation is sure to drop drastically after 4 years, are these annual awards helpful in still maintaining a relatively respectable TC? I'll be joining as a L63 SDE. Expected TC after averaging out initial RSU grant, Sign-on bonus, and base is 325k/year. Not counting any cash bonus and any annual stock grant. Once I complete 4 years, TC will drastically fall to 180 (which is my base). So why do people stay at Microsoft for 4+ years?

Because they’re not good enough to find anything better

Could you break down TC calculation? It's very good for 63. Are you at Azure? Or specialized in ML?

Base 180k (I assumed 2% increase to base per year in my TC calculations), 420k RSU, 130k SignOn. I did not include any cash bonus any stock grant. I'll be working on Azure.

You are confused. Even if you stay at 63 for 4 years your TC would not drop to just your base. The target is 15% bonus + 17k stock. Good performers get 120% of that, very good 180% (200% stock), top performers 200% (225% stock). So even if you didnt get any raises (which isn't really possible), at worst youd be at about 225 tc. With the range about 225-300k. You will likely get raises as well, although you are pretty high up in the salary range for l63. It's also very possible you'll get promoted during that time as well, possibly twice. L65 from where you are would be probably at least 205k salary, 36-90k stock, 20-40% bonus. Range 280-375. Your offer, btw, is fantastic for l63.

Hi, thanks for the explanation. Yes, I wasn't aware of the targets and how it works. Recruiter while otherwise great was unable to explain this aspect very well I don't trust companies with cash bonus, that's why I didn't include any cash bonus in my TC as well. But I do get a better picture now, thanks.

Looks like they raised the max stock to 48k, so you should update the target stock to 24k.

Wow! Then that’s a fantastic MSFT offer for that experience, even if you had a PhD.
