How do promotions and upleveling work ?

I recently accepted an offer at Square. I've never worked in a company that had very clearly defined levels and all that.

I haven't even started at Square, so it's not like I'll be in the running for any promotions any time soon, but I was just wondering how do promotions and upleveling work once you're in the company and working there?
