Some schools have a waitlist, what does that mean? Do kids need to take a year gap in that case?

    If not accepted and don't clear the waitlist you attend elsewhere.

      Elsewhere where? And how? Do you get assigned a new school district?

      What do you mean how? Yes you go elsewhere. Usually you would be applying to the charter school if public so if you don't get in then you go to the local school, rarely would you need to go outside of the area let alone district.

    Below college;
    - some public schools have entrance exams
    - charter schools are funded by public schools and can have both waitlists and entrance exams
