Just do it, your family are there to comfort you and provide sympathy in these times. They’re the ones that’ll be there for you through thick-and-thin.

Pick up your phone and call. You’re not a failure; you got laid off. Trust me, as someone who’s been through tech and was laid-off from my first job out of grad school (after working there for four years) was devastating. Sadly, my parents blamed me, but it was 2004 and the economy had taken some hits. That was 20 years ago and I look back and am glad I moved on and moved up. I’ve worked for many big tech companies. Sooner or later, you will be laid off, riffed, reorged, or whatnot in tech. If this news upsets your family and they treat you horribly, lean on friends. You’ll get through this.

What did your family blame for?

SAP Skeptic20 May 5, 2020

They told me that I must’ve done something wrong or f$&@ed up. I’ve learned since that time and over the years, it’s best not to tell them much.

When delivering bad news it's best to say "I have some bad news" to immediately set the tone without shocking anybody, wait a second, then say the bad news clearly without sugar coating it. In this situation I think you should also have a plan and describe how you will maintain your current expenses & lifestyle.

Here’s a smooth way : Tell them that layoffs are happening week on weekly basis and you are not on the list for now Next week tell them some of the folks you know who actually do really good job got laid off Next week tell them you are getting indications of lay-off but your name isn’t there for now. The next week tell them you are in the list. I know this is not factual but my brother informed us and I totally saw how gracefully it went. It’s not about facts, it’s about preparing your dear ones.

Reminds me of a joke. Wife is traveling and calls husband to check on how everything is back home. Husband says, everything else is fine, but the cat died. Wife is appalled at the callous way he is breaking this sad news to her and proceeds to coach him. "You should break bad news gently. You could have said that the cat is playing on the roof, then you could have said the cat fell down, got injured, and then after a day or two you could have let me know that he died." Anyway, how is my mom doing? Husband: Your mom's playing on the roof.

Why do you need to share the information unless you need assistance of some sorts (emotional or economical)?
