How do you compare offers in terms of TC between Seattle and Bay Area.

Currently in Seattle , and could move if necessary. I don't really care about the sun so that has no value to me. I own a home in Seattle, married with no kids. What is the right way to match numbers? I don't think the difference is only the 10% state tax. According to nerdwallet it is 24% more expensive. Is it then reasonable to ask for an offer in Bay area to at least match Seattle's +24%?

Honestly just stay in Seattle if the weather doesn’t bother you. It’s a much nicer city apart from the weather, socialization, and dating — you sound isolated from those issues. You can get Bay Area numbers in TC up in Seattle with lots of places, I would just go for that.

Thank you. Great answer

TC won't be 24% different -- more like 5-10%. The majority of tech companies (including the big N) do not properly scale income for living costs (especially when transferring overseas).

So people in Bay area are really paying about 14% of their income for more sunny days. Well, it pays off to be an indoor person. Thanks!

Yeah, housing in the Bay is atrociously bad. You're probably paying 10K more annually in rent alone for a longer commute. In addition, Seattle has no state income tax so that's 5-10% extra for your earnings.

What you get in Bay Area is mobility - lots more choices and potential to increase your pay. As you get more senior Bay Area becomes harder to leave, as market liquidity anywhere else for senior roles (incl Seattle) is low. I’m in Bay Area and wish I were in Seattle or somewhere more affordable. The cost of living (housing) is just nuts. I’m considering moving and taking a role there but my concern is what if I don’t like this new company. If you already like your company stay in Seattle. Or get a Bay Area offer to negotiate

Bay area offer should be 30-40% higher
