I currently work at a small dev company as a full-stack developer, and my boss admitted to me, within earshot of other employees as well, that another employee refuses to be in the same office area as me because of my skin color. The majority of the office employees are caucasian, and I think there's only 3 of us that aren't. TC is below average, but it's a comfy / chill place to work at otherwise. What would you do in my situation? #companyculture
Who says you need to do anything? Your manager is aware.
Him being aware and not doing anything about the situation makes him complicit. OP definitely needs to do something.
Op didn’t mention his boss not doing anything. Are you a mind reader?
That’s pretty wild. I personally wouldn’t want to work at a company where that’s permissible. All that should matter is your ability to do good work in a team. Fuck that guy.
Everything was ok in the beginning but I guess it's too good to be true. I still do my work, collaborate, etc - but having the racism hovering above my head is just demoralizing
I think that answers the question of whether or not you should leave. There’s no question that this would get a person fired quicker than you can say, “See ya!” at most tech companies in the Bay Area. Ever consider moving out here?
Document it. Try to get your boss to email this racism via email.
That's the p*ssy way out. Beat his ass up
But the racist is a female. Also, majority of the office are also females
Stripper ?
I wish - my TC is below theirs
Strippers earn insane in LV. It's actually difficult to be strippers at LV
Why don’t they fire the other employee. How can you work together if you don’t like someone because of their race. Maybe this place is a little too chill.
They havent fired the other employee - the whole issue was really just swept under the rug, and to be honest I would be somewhat putting myself at financial risk if I bring up this issue and risk losing my job
I would start looking for another job. You got this bro!
Tbh it does not sound comfy / chill to be working with these people. Leave.
Move to west coast ... no racism here 👍
Document and sue! Your boss, as a manager, is obligated to report behavior like this and the company needs to deal with it. If that’s not happening, it’s grounds for a discrimination lawsuit.
Unfortunately, the reality at a lot of smaller companies isn’t the same reality that corporate America is living in. Finding a lawyer that will sue a small company for a likely dismal sum is damn near impossible.
I agree with this course of action. Document for sure and sue if possible. The documentation, at the very least, will be appreciated by potential employees when you post it somewhere like on medium.
Where is this office, by the way?
Las Vegas, NV
I'd ask the manager if racism is acceptable
