I don't get why people would drive an >=hour to get to work. That's a solid 14 hours out of your week if you count the return trip too. How do y'all with long commutes justify it? How do you help the time pass? Is it as bad as it sounds?
Audiobooks & podcasts. The 1 hour + also depends on if that is including traffic or not
Depends where you are. I'm in Philly. I live close to the city because the houses are cheaper. But all of the tech jobs are either in the city (which has a steep wage tax) or out in a suburb with horrible traffic or in Delaware. I just started working in DE and it's a much shorter commute, which I'm loving. But not every area has a tech community spread out enough to choose.
the only way to justify it is to make sure your rents and possibly living expenses are way lower than they'd be if you lived at a place that allowed shorter commute
Good school for kiddos + (relatively)Value real estate = long commute for parents
I finish a side project per month in caltrain; when you are not the driver, it is easier to be more productive. — otherwise: audiobook + podcast.
I drive 1.25 hours one way each day. I justified it because the paycheck made it worth it. Audible and podcasts keep me occupied.
My commute is 15 minutes. I will always live close to my job. It used to be 60-90 for the purpose of lower rent, but once I did the math and put a value on that extra time relaxing every day, I bit the bullet. Also, I side hustle with some of that time savings and make up that difference in rent easily.
during my ride 1.5 with traffic I promote my other business ventures www.asirvia.com/mambaout no B'S it's what I do so it becomes a game!
my job is fantastic. worth the hour long commute.

RIP Lacework
I used to commute an hour/hour and a half for my first tech job. I just justified it by it was getting my foot in the door for everything else. I don't think I'd commute again like that unless I got a huge offer.
